Game Industry DifferencesThere are two major differences to the end product produced by the game industry and that produced in the typical corporate environment
The game industry is highly focused on fun and entertainment for the general consumer. If it isnt fun and entertaining it wont sell and if it doesnt sell your business fails. While fun and entertaining are also important in the corporate environment, they are usually not the primary driver. The primary driver is the conveyance of information and the propagation of the understanding of a particular topic or problem. In the game industry, a large, usually multi-million dollar, up-front investment is expected to create a high quality game. If done properly, consumers may spend tens or hundreds of millions of dollars resulting in potentially large profits and a high-risk / high-return business model that works. Corporate environments do not have a similar business model. Usually corporations have difficulties investing large up-front expenditures, especially when the typical custom application that could benefit from the use of gaming technology does not have the potential return that a consumer game might. |
