Using ActiveX controls in Visual Basic

This tutorial demonstrates how to create an application that uses an ActiveX control - in this case, Strip Chart - with Visual Basic (VB).
  1. Start VB by double-clicking the Visual Basic icon from your desktop or choose
Start > All Programs > Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 > Microsoft Visual Basic.
  2. Choose Standard EXE from the New tab on the New project window and click Open.
  3. Right-click anywhere in the vertical palette and select "Components..." from the menu to open the Components dialog box (shown).

  4. Check the box beside GMS Strip Chart to add it to the toolbar palette and click OK.
  5. Double-click the Strip Chart icon that appears in the toolbar palette. This creates an instance of the control on the form.
  6. Select the Form1 window so that the handles appear. Place your cursor over the bottom right handle so that the cursor changes to a pointer (double-ended arrow). Left-click and drag the pointer to size the form as desired. Size Strip Chart (or whatever ActiveX you are using) to your desired size.
At this point, you have inserted an ActiveX Component into your Visual Basic project. You can access its properties using the Properties window of the VB environment or, in the case of all Global Majic Software controls, through a set of custom property pages. These pages may can be opened by right-clicking the control. For our instrumentation products, select the "Properties..." menu item.
