ICON

Boeing's ICON (Interactive Concept of OperatioNs) application is a completely new paradigm for conveying the complex aspects of conceptual space oriented missions. ICON is a tightly integrated, interactive 3D technical presentation application consisting of a series of concept of operation visualizations for a variety of space-based missions.

Using a robust mixture of sources for terrain, CAD, simulation data, video, audio, and slide sets, ICON combines these numerous forms of information with realistic 3D graphics into a single presentation tool. The user has the unique ability to integrate external information into any aspect of the many mission elements available. Once the user completes valid selections from the menu matrix, ICON loads the appropriate locations, vehicles, camera views, instrumentation and any additional information relative to the mission plan and destination.

Some of the integrated missions to date include elements for Low-Earth Orbit Operations, manned rendezvous to and from the International Space Station, an in-depth manned launch, Lunar touch-down, and return to Earth scenario. A variety of mission elements and operations are planned for future growth of ICON.

ICON Kiosk is a special version of ICON that contains a concept of operation for NASA Constellation Program missions to the International Space Station and Moon. ICON Kiosk has been regularly used in high profile outreach venues by Boeing and NASA personnel. These venues include television media events, major tradeshows, space industry conferences, and presentations to political and civil service leaders within the space community.

Content from ICON has been used by Boeing in numerous newspaper and magazine advertisements, publicity material and at a variety of public relations events.
