Earth Viewer

Earth View is a configuration of the Scene Generator render engine in which cameras and coordinate systems are set up for exploration of a planetary object and in particular the Earth. Earth View consists of a base model of the Earth which is loaded with a start map and an atmospheric model.

Earth View engages the MajicStudio Terrain Manager service to dynamically load terrain elevation and texture data into the scene graph. Earth View uses a camera driven geo-referenced view frustum to control the paging of appropriate resolution geometry and texture from a terrain database.

The MajicStudio terrain manager uses a local cache mechanism to render content from the local hard drive. When the camera traverses to an area not covered by the local cache database, a remote terrain database can be accessed for further terrain detail. During application deployment, the local cache can be configured and packaged to contain only the specific terrain data required for a custom stand-alone application. For these types of stand-alone applications it is not necessary to have a separate terrain database server.

For applications where very large amounts of terrain data must be accessible, a delivered MajicStudio based application may be configured to automatically connect to the terrain database server when additional terrain content is required. In large corporate application deployments, it is typical to configure a separate terrain database server containing all of the terrain that MajicStudio applications may be required to access.
